He holds degrees in mathematics, theology, and canon law, having studied at Villanova University, Catholic Theological Union, and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
Ordained in 1982, he served as a missionary in Peru, later becoming Bishop of Chiclayo (2015–2023), and was known for his pastoral care and service to the poor.
He led the Augustinian Order worldwide as Prior General (2001–2013) and was later appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
Created Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023, he was known for humility, administrative skill, and fidelity to Church teaching.
As Pope, he chose the name Leo XIV, reflecting a desire to renew the Church in truth and charity, continuing the path of synodality and pastoral outreach.
